SGA Committees

Each year the SGA establishes committees to handle various types of senate business.  To apply for funding from a senate committee contact the SGA secretary, Ms. Brooks, 832-3740, or click on the links below to send an email to the committee chairperson.

Conference Committee — the Conference Committee provides funds for senate-approved conferences throughout the U.S. that help to develop leadership skills. The trips are open to full-time student leaders and Senators who are in good standing with the university and the Senate.

Events Committee — the Events Committee provides funds for campus events, both events being put forward by clubs and SGA- sponsored events.  The committee meets twice per month to plan events and to meet with clubs needing money for expenses associated with their events, such as room rental or security.

Finance Committee — the Finance Committee is responsible for distributing funds to clubs and organizations on campus.  The Finance Committee awards most requests; however, larger requests may also need to be presented to the full Senate. The Finance Committee meets once per week to discuss its business and to listen to requests for funding from student clubs and organizations, see the finance committee page for more info.

Promotions Committee - the Promotions Committee promotes and publicizes the SGA and its events.

SAB (Student Advisory Board) — the SGA representatives to the CSU Student Advisory Board attend SAB meetings. These meetings deal with issues common to all CSU colleges. There are 3 SGA representatives to the board. These meetings are also attended by the SGA advisor who is a part of the Student Affairs Department here at Central. Meetings are twice a month at the CSU System Office.

Scholarship Committee — each year the Scholarship Committee awards scholarships to CCSU students who have in some way made a difference at CCSU through personal endeavor. Applications may be submitted by any full-time undergraduate student who meet the academic requirements.  The committee is responsible for providing notice of the scholarship to the student body, reviewing all applications and for posting the names of recipients in the student newspaper. Applications for this Scholarship are available from the committee chair.

Student Elections Committee — the Student Elections Committee is responsible for administering both the Freshman Elections in the Fall semester and the General Senate Elections in the Spring semester. The committee publicizes the events, signs-up candidates, oversees the voting, and counts the ballots.

SUBOG — the SGA representatives to SUBOG attend its meetings and vote as members. SUBOG is the part of the university’s educational program that deals with student’s informal association outside the classroom. Among other things, SUBOG makes recommendations to the department of Student Center Operations and Event Services & the department of Student Activities and Leadership development. These departments administer the Student Union. They make decisions regarding events, programs, allocation of space in the student center and other important student activity-related issues.

Student Life Committee — the Student Services Committee acts as a liaison between students and the Student Affairs office to address student concerns regarding services on campus. Meetings are held twice a month. Students who are unsatisfied with any service on campus should report their concerns to this committee.

SGA Quick Facts

All undergraduate students who attend CCSU are members of the Student Government Association. The Student Senate, also referred to as the SGA, is the voting body, which governs expenditures made using a portion of the student activity fees paid to CCSU. The senate consists of Resident Senators, Commuter Senators and an Executive Board made up of a President, Vice-President and Treasurer.

The SGA gets its funds from student activity fees. We operate under CT Statute 4-54. The portion of the fee managed by the SGA consists of $44 out of each student’s total activity fees. These monies are used for the following purposes:

1. The Senate Budget, which is the portion of the monies used to allocate funds for senate-sponsored events, both the senate’s own events and those held in conjunction with other groups on campus.

a. Base Budgets - clubs and organizations are allocated a base amount each year.   according to how well they have used their budgets in past years. New clubs receive a base budget allocation of $500.00.

b. Supplements - clubs and organizations may apply for additional funds to pay for such items as conferences, supplies & equipment.

c. Committee Budgets - SGA committees receive budgets to carry out their various responsibilities. Some of these committees allocate funds to student clubs and organizations for the specific purpose managed by that committee.

2. The Senate Operations Budget is used to pay for general operating expenses such as office supplies, phones and the copier and to pay senate workers.
