
Media Board Meeting

Present: Matthew Barnes, Melissa Traynor, Peter Collin, Wayne DeRoy, Tiffany Moffo Simpson, Vivian Martin, Richard Mount, Michelle Hannon, David Cappella, Susan Sweeney (Advisor), Amanda James (UA)
I. Welcome
Mr. Barnes called the meeting to order at 12:10p.m.
The minutes from the September 5, 2008 meeting were reviewed.
Motion: (DeRoy/Hannon) To approve the May 18, 2007 Media Board Minutes.
Motion Passed (6 Yes, 0 No, 0 Abstained) (MBD 09-01)
Mr. Barnes asked everyone to introduce themselves.
II. Attendance
Attendance was passed around.
III. Open Seats
Mr. Barnes confirmed that Ms. Moffo Simpson would like to continue in her seat as the Student Affairs Representative on the Media Board. Mr. Barnes will confirm that Ms. Ritzenhoff would like to stay on the board as an Academic Faculty Representative.
Mr. Barnes will be leaving his position as the chair of the Media Board in December and Ms. Sweeney suggested that we begin looking for a new chairperson at this time. The need for a chairperson in December should be considered when recruiting members for the open Student at Large positions, of which there are currently 2 open positions.
There is also a Community Representative position open.
IV. Constitution By Laws
Ms. Sweeney and Mr. Barnes have met regarding finance by laws for the Media Board Constitution Ms. Sweeney will put them together and have them for the board to look over.
The board will be having a finance meeting on 10/24/08 so that Media Board budgets can be set.
Mr. Barnes would also like to look at each of the constitutions for the media organizations over the following months and have Media Board members make suggestions about the different constitutions.
V. Ethics Board
Mr. Barnes informed the Media Board that an Ethics Board has been founded and that they are meeting today at 2 p.m. Mr. Barnes will be attending the meeting and he will share information at the next Media Board meeting.
VI. Other Business
Mr. Barnes told the club organizations who are interested in attending media conferences (AWP, CMA, CMJ) to get the information about who will be attending to Mr. James by next week.
The Media Board would like to bring a speaker in November to talk about media Ms. Sweeney asked members to think about ideas for possible speakers.
Mr. Barnes and Ms. Sweeney have been looking into hiring a graphic artist/web designer for the Media Board. So far they have been unsuccessful in finding anybody who ahs the necessary qualifications. For now they might hire someone with only graphic design skills and have each of the media organizations employ people to maintain their websites.
Ms. Sweeney announces the the Student Center server is currently down and club websites cannot currently be accessed. They are working on resolving this problem.
Ms. Martin announced that November 13th there will be a Journalism Conferences with programs/lectures occurring throughout the day.
VI. Sharing
Mr. DeRoy shared that WFCS has had a lot of interested from students wanting to become DJ’s. WFCS is also considering underwriting and Mr. DeRoy will meet with Mr. Sweeney to discuss the details. They are also looking at going with another provider for their online subscription because their current provider is becoming too expensive. WFCS is purchasing new computers. They are also looking at purchasing DJ equipment so that on and off campus organizations could hire them to DJ for events.
Ms. Traynor said that The Recorder sent out recruitment postcards to students and got a good response. They are trying to get the new members through training. Ms. Traynor would also like create sets of guidelines for each of the sections in the newspaper. Since they have new members many members of their Editorial Board are new to the board. The Recorder is also interested in buying their own domain name.
Mr. Mount announced that Off-Center will be coming out 11/3, right in time for the election. The submission deadline is 10/15. They are looking into selling ads in the future. They have a few new members but would also be interested in sending out postcards targeted at transfer students.
Ms. Hannon announced that the Helix currently has an ad on Central Pipeline which seems to be working, since they have had new members and many submissions. The submission deadline is 10/20 and they will release in December. They are purchasing a new laptop since they are so mobile.
Our next meeting will be a finance meeting on October 24th at 12p.m.
Our next full Media Board meeting will be November 7th at 12 p.m.
