II. Attendance
Attendance was passed around.
III. Membership
Ms. Sweeney announced that the President has not yet chosen an Academic Faculty Representative but one should be appointed shortly, this position is for 2 years so will not need to be reappointed until May 2009. There is a Student at Large position available on the Media Board. An SGA appointment also needs to be made to the Media Board. Ms. Sweeney spoke about the 2007-2008 membership on the Media Board and mentioned that at the next meeting we should elect a chairperson for next year.
IV. Task force for Journalistic Integrity
Ms. Sweeney spoke about some of the findings of the President’s Task Force for Journalistic Integrity. The task force is considering proposing mandatory training for Media Organizations. Ms. Sweeney commented that she thought the Media Board was already at a point where they would want to do training, not because it is mandated, but because they want to grow. Ms. Sweeney talked about the kind of training that is typical to student organizations. There is usually a separate training for the executive board earlier in the summer at which they prepare training for the rest of the members of the organization. Mr. Estrom has been to training sessions for other campus organizations and said that it is a great team building experience and is something every student organization should consider. Mr. McDonald pointed out that to make it mandatory for every student in the organization would be very difficult because of their full schedules, Ms. Barrieau concurred. Mr. Mamed wondered whether the faculty who recommended this mandatory training would be involved in helping develop it. Ms. Sweeney responded by saying that they do have ideas about what the training should look like but she does not know if they are planning to organize it. Mr. Tercyak-Morgan said that if they implement training it should be because it is something they Media Board feels that they should do, not because the task force mandates it. Ms. Barrieau commented that the Media Board is making changes and that some media organizations, such as WFCS do mandate training. Mr. Rowan thinks that these trainings are something that should happen naturally. Ms. Moffo shared that the findings of the Task Force would be announced April 30th at 1 p.m. in Vance 105 and would compare CCSU media organization to like colleges and universities. Ms. Sweeney said that there would be a chance to respond to the president about the findings on May 11th.
V. Media Board Intern
Ms. Sweeney said that the Media Board may want to consider having a graduate intern to assist them next year. This intern would be somewhat of an advisor and a connection between the students and their own advisors. This person would be younger and close in age with the students and would help support and facilitate their work. Ms. Barrieau shared that she though that an intern could help facilitate a lot of the work and that the Media Board should discuss this more at the next meeting.
VI. Sharing
WFCS received an award at the Recognition Dinner for the program of the year. Mr. McDonald also shared that they got a recording of Dan Rather saying the name of the station that they can now play on the air.
The Recorder shared that they changed the editorial process and are having a meeting on Monday to compare the changes to their constitution and to clarify some statements. They will then send the changes to Ms. Sweeney to have them approved. The Recorders elections will be in May.
The Dial is finishing editing their footage and photos from the first semester and will release the yearbook the 2nd week of May.
VII. Other Business
The Media Board has created a rough draft of a Media Board pamphlet to distribute. The members should look over the pamphlet and make any suggestions as soon as possible. Budgets should be submitted our next meet which will be May 18th at 12 p.m.
Meeting adjourned at 1:45 p.m.
