The Central Connecticut State University Regional Mathematics Competition
The competition took place on April 18, 2009 at 2pm. Seven schools sent representatives to compete. There were thirty two competitors in total. Considering that this is the first intercollegiate math competition being held at CCSU, we see this as a complete success. This event will be running again next year. We have already started the planning for it and this time we won't schedule it on the same day as the Hudson River Valley Conference. We hadn't heard about this conference before. However, now we plan to attend it now too.
The tests have been graded and thankfully there is a clear gap between 3rd and 4th place. The results will be posted by Friday at the latest. Prizes should go out on Friday as well. The graders are currently in the process of ranking the schools and students. It will take a little longer for the plaque to arrive at the victorious school, since it still needs to be engraved. I have posted the test below. Solutions will be posted soon as well. I will also maintain our math club problem sets on the internet by popular demand (mostly from CCSU students). Everything is going to be slowly updated.
I would like to take this opportunity to formally thank everyone who helped with the competition. Organizing this event was a lot of work (especially with 18 credits). I wouldn't have been able to do it without the support of CCSU's math department, the ad hoc committee that formed to design everything, all of the volunteered help from students and faculty, and our representative in the Student Activities department (Sue Sweeney).
I would also like to thank everyone who participated and even those who expressed interest, but couldn't make it. I received a lot of encouragement from the students and faculty at Williams College (Dr. Miller was exceptionally helpful), Uconn (Dr. Conrad's support was amazing), Sacred Heart, Suffolk University, Trinity College, Wesleyan, Quinnipiac, Umass Amherst, Clarkson University, SUNY Potsdam, Yale, and MIT. Thank you and I hope to see you all next year.
The
top school for our 2009 competition was Trinity College.
