JAN 31ST MINUTES Current mood: predatory Progressive Student Alliance Minuets January 31, 2007 The PSA is happy to welcome a number of new members and guests! Happy birthday, Colin! Happy birthday, Liz! Ice Breaker: Who are you and what is your major? Riot Folk: JVB was contacted by people from Riot Folk. They are asking for $200 to $300 each. NC suggested that we offer them food only. JB noted that for a single event/act what they are asking for is a lot of money. NC suggested that we wait and see how much money we have left at the end of the year. MTR said that we could co-sponsor something with another club around Earth Day. Forums: There was no meeting for WIN last night so the pro-choice forum was not discussed. NC is doing "Know Your Rights" for March. He will discuss how not to get arrested and what not to do if you are. ARC: DP explained the anti-war referendum to the new members and guests. NC said that we should print ballots and hand them out ASAP. DP added flyers to NC's suggestion. NC motioned that we print 1,000 ballots and 50 posters (plus more if we need them). The Referendum will start on Monday, February 4 and end on Thursday March 1. The motion passes. WRC: WS explained what the WRC is to the new members. Last week JD got flyers out to many people. They seem to be getting noticed. It was noted that Natural Helpers will pay for all food and an additional $700 towards Devil's Den events. WS met with President Miller Monday. Miller and/or his attorney still believe that the university may be contractually bound to do something if sweatshops are found. WS pointed out that this is exactly the intention of the WRC. There will be a Fashion Show meeting after PSA NCOR: KN explained what NCOR is with WS's help. NC gave even more information. JVB explained that these events can be a lot of fun. VP has to make telephone calls about lodging, his emails were not answered. NC motioned that if we don't have a definite answer on lodging for next week we will look into further alternatives although they may cost us more money. The motion passes. United for Peace and Justice March Report Back: NC, KN, DP, LG, VP, and CH were at the march. NC gave a report back about being in the black bloc. DP mentioned that he likes to talk to new people at protest marches. CH talked about the positive aspects of the main march and how it allows people who are very likely to get arrested a place to protest. DP warned that sometimes protest marches can be violent and that this keeps people away, yet he was also quick to point out that this didn't happen this weekend. VP noted that there is always a place to be whether you want to be in the black bloc or the main march. JVB pointed out that when there are celebrities around or members of Congress police are not going to attack the march. VP mentioned that the march was on the news and further noted that a number of people began to join the black bloc. CH expressed that he feels black bloc marchers keep people away and activist should rather be educating the masses. PSA Party: The first party has been pushed back one week. It will be held at the Pueblo. Saturday, February 10 from 8:00 until ???? Banner: NC and MTR will make a new banner tonight. It will be awesome.
